Satirical poster showing two smiling middle-aged men on either side of a glamorous sci-fi styled woman, with the bold headline “Because F*ck Science” and subtitle “CSIRO Funding Cuts.” Logos for THC and CSIRO appear in the corners.
“Because why invest in science when you can just vibe your way through national policy? 🤷‍♂️🔬 #CSIROFundingCuts #BecauseFuckScience #TheHollowCentre”

CSIRO? Sorry Mate — Because… Fuck Science

CSIRO? Sorry mate, Australia has finally solved the age-old riddle:
What happens when you defund your national science agency during a time of climate chaos, cyberattacks, biosecurity threats, economic flatlining, and weather events that look like the end-of-year boss fight?

Easy.

You save a few hundred million bucks now…
And light the next several decades on fire.

Welcome to CSIROgeddon — the blockbuster sequel nobody wanted, produced by a government that keeps declaring we’re an “innovation nation” while innovating new ways to make Australia dumber, slower, more vulnerable, and more dependent on foreign tech.

THE OFFICIAL LINE: “WE LOVE SCIENCE!”

Of course they do.
They love science the same way people “love the gym” — conceptually, hypothetically, and at a distance far enough that there’s no risk of accidentally funding it.

So far we’re looking at:

  • Up to 350 CSIRO jobs cut in 2025
  • Research programs collapsing like a cheap camping chair
  • Climate, agriculture, biosecurity, energy and health teams entering the “updating résumé at 11pm” phase
  • Infrastructure so outdated CSIRO needs $80–$135 million extra every year just to stop things physically falling apart

So the government’s response?

Cut more.

“Innovation nation!” they shout, turning the national supercomputer off and on again.

WHAT AUSTRALIA LOSES WHEN YOU GUT THE CSIRO

A quick highlight reel of national self-harm:

🌪️ Natural Disaster Modelling

Who needs accurate fire and flood forecasts?
Just ask the BOM to “guess with confidence.”

🌡️ Climate Science

The planet’s cooking like a servo pie left under a heat lamp.
Our response?
“Fire the cooks.”

🧪 Biosecurity

The next major pathogen will proudly announce:
“Brought to you by: Sorry, We Cut the Lab.”

🌾 Agriculture

Farmers get drought, pests, and collapsing soil systems.
The government gives them…
A press conference and a handshake.

🔋 Energy & Critical Minerals

While other nations race to own the future, Australia’s strategy appears to be:
“Let’s wait and import it at triple the price.”

🧠 Brain Drain

CSIRO researchers aren’t staying for the vibes.
They’ll be doing groundbreaking research overseas while we’re Googling “what is data science?”

SO WHY CUT SCIENCE? WHAT’S THE REAL MOTIVE?

This is where The Hollow Centre lights a candle, sips a coffee, and sighs deeply.

Because none of this makes sense unless you consider:

1. National Amnesia Is a Policy Tool

No data = no evidence.
No evidence = no accountability.
No accountability = clean hands and re-election.
Genius.

2. Silencing Experts Makes Governing Easier

Climate scientists: “Your policy is mathematically insane.”
Government: “Not anymore.”

3. Outsource Everything → Depend on Foreign Corporations

Cut public research → force industry to buy solutions from overseas → become permanently dependent.
It’s like deleting your homework and then renting it back from Amazon.

4. Make Crises Worse, Blame the Other Side Later

No bushfire modelling?
No flood mapping?
No long-term climate data?
Perfect.
Next disaster:
“HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? Definitely the last government.”

5. Follow the Money (Spoiler: Science Doesn’t Donate)

CSIRO doesn’t fund campaigns, take ministers to lunch, or buy billboard ads.
Research produces facts, not political donations.
And that’s an unforgivable sin.

6. The Quiet War on Competence

Investing in experts might accidentally result in… policy based on reality.
Can’t have that.

THE REAL COST: A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR SELF-OWN

Australia’s productivity is at a 60-year low, national R&D investment has fallen from 2.25% of GDP to 1.63%, and CSIRO is one of the last institutions holding the innovation ecosystem together with a paperclip and a prayer.

Cutting it means:

  • Lower GDP
  • Slower industry growth
  • More climate catastrophe
  • More biosecurity failures
  • Higher reliance on foreign tech
  • Regional job losses
  • Fewer breakthroughs
  • And a future economy built out of scrap metal and wishful thinking

All to save… what?
A rounding error?

THE HOLLOW CENTRE VERDICT

Australia isn’t cutting CSIRO because the budget is tight.

It’s cutting CSIRO because:

  • Short-term savings look sexy on a press release
  • Long-term consequences aren’t due until after the next election
  • Experts interfere with vibes-based policymaking
  • Science is politically inconvenient
  • And somewhere along the way, someone in Canberra decided facts are optional

This isn’t budget repair.
This is national self-sabotage disguised as fiscal responsibility.

Australia is removing its own airbags because “installing them costs too much.”

The crash will be spectacular.
And entirely preventable.
